Have you had an engine failure? Mark Levy has, and it was all caught on dramatic video. Watch the video first, and then listen to Mark digest what happened with Richard McSpadden, the director of AOPA's Air Safety Institute. Plus stick around for this week's headlines.

I know this is Monday morning quarter backing.
But he should have broke away from the formation immediately, flown directly to airport. He was already on a wide right base leg and landed down wind on the same runway. At that time he had the airport/runway made.
Why would you ever enter the active traffic pattern with a failing engine. At least if he didn't make the runway he would have made the airport.

I don’t think I’ve EVER seen better judgment in the short seconds Mark had from beginning to end in my entire flying career. Add to that the temptation of being oh so close to a runway, yet he realizes the horrible consequences of trying and still has the professionalism to raise the gear and lower the flaps a second or two before plowing the field. Well done would be an understatement in the extreme!

Thank you Mark for allowing the rest of us to watch.

    Best Regards

Thanks for sharing your experience Mark. Training, practice, watching countless videos and listening to other pilots experiences helped me make it through a night time engine failure.

What a superb video and interview. Incredibly instructive to all pilots. Thanks.
